Water, many agree, is our most precious natural resource; without it, life ceases.  With the turn of a handle, you get as much as you want, whenever you want it.  Yet judging by our water-use practices, many people take water for granted.

 In spite of the recent rainfall, the Texas is still experiencing drought conditions very similar to this time period in 2000.  The National Weather Service reports that Texas is experiencing the longest dry spell since the drought of record in the 1950s. 

How has the current drought affected us?

 

  • 9,220 wildfires have occurred since December 26, 2005, with over 3,330,678 acres burned
  • Statewide reservoir capacity is 78.6 percent
  • In January 2006, 42 communities in Texas were under formal water use restrictions, increasing to 99 communities in February, and 108 communities in March 2006.
